Genre and Animal Farm

In class, your group discussed what genre Animal Farm might be. Most of you came down on the side of fantasy, feeling that having talking animals in the novel made it a fantasy. Since that discussion, you have learned more about what George Orwell was trying to communicate about history, particularly that of the Russian Revolution.

On your four-page Animal Farm handout, please refer to page 2, "Glossary of Literary Terms", which discusses these genres: allegory, didactic literature, fable, fairy tale, parable, propaganda, and satire. Now, what genre would you say Animal Farm is? Does it fit in more than one genre? Can you make a case for still calling it a fantasy?

  1. I think that animal is realistic fiction because the whole book is really relating to the lack of freedom in Russia.

  2. I think the book is realistic fiction because it relates to the russian revolution. I also think that it is fantasy because there are talking animals throughout the whole story. It's a little confusing.

  3. I think that there isnt realy one genre for this book. This book is an allegory, witch meens that is symbolizes something. The whole book is a symbolic retelling of the Russion Revalution through animals on a farm.

  4. I think that this book is realistic fiction because it's refering to what happened in Russia yet it's with animals so it couldn't happen like it does in animal farm.

  5. I think Animal Farm would fall into the genre of historical fiction, because it relates to the whole story is based on the Russian Revolution, but each person is represented with talking animals.

  6. I think that Animal Farm is realistic fiction too because the book is relating to the horrible thing that happened in Russia so the book really is just showing us that if we're not careful then this whole catastrophe could happen again

  9. Animal Farm is the Russian Revolution in different words. Most animals take part as one of the people who took part or changed the war.
